Chateau Zegaani:

Journey Through the Ages

Georgian letter

The history of Chateau Zegaani began in 1783 when King Erekle II granted land and wineries in Kakheti to Prince Garsevan Chavchavadze, his official representative and diplomat who participated in negotiating and signing the Treaty of Georgievsk.

Construction of the wine chateau in Kakheti began in 1820 under the initiative of his son, Alexander Chavchavadze. Upon returning home after military campaigns in Europe, Alexander showed great interest and care in developing local wine culture. He introduced new methods to the region, including aging wine in oak barrels and planting vineyards separated by grape varieties.

A New Era of Chateau Zegaani

Since 1998, Chateau Zegaani has been privately owned. Over time, it became integral to the Tatulashvili family history, for whom creating wine is as important as preserving the spirit of this place and continuing Georgian winemaking traditions.

David Tatulashvili hails from the Kartli region, where winemaking culture was integral to his family’s way of life. From an early age, he was immersed in this world: observing elders, absorbing their knowledge, mastering vineyard care, and learning the art of winemaking.

Upon arriving at Chateau Zegaani, David dedicated himself to reviving the winery, preserving its authentic spirit and respect for Georgian winemaking traditions.

The architectural and landscape character of the chateau owes much to Natalia Tatulashvili’s careful and thoughtful approach. During restoration, she insisted on preserving the estate’s green environment and historical building details.

Moreover, Natalia implemented a zero-waste production policy: grape seeds are processed into oil and flour, Saperavi grape skins fermented into tea, and stems and prunings returned to the soil as organic fertilizer. This approach reflects the family’s philosophy — respectful use of nature’s gifts without causing harm.

Today, Chateau Zegaani embodies family effort, respect for history, and thoughtful environmental stewardship. The chateau blends tradition with a careful, mindful approach to winemaking, preserving the historic essence of this unique place.

Today, David and Natalia Tatulashvili pass their experience to the next generation — their sons Andrey and Dmitry, for whom Chateau Zegaani has become home. The family business naturally integrated into their lives, and they are actively involved in the winemaking process, embracing values and philosophies established by their parents.

The approach to winemaking at Chateau Zegaani is grounded in respect for nature and the desire to preserve its original harmony. Everything created here follows nature’s natural order. Family traditions, continuity, and the bond between generations provide a firm foundation — unchanging elements that define the past, present, and future.
